Red Red Wine on a Sunday #53 - Hangin Downtown

Pinball, CBGB, 1977. David Johansen, Dee Dee Ramone, and Andy Paley watch Lenny Kaye play during an often heated four-way pinball game at CBGB. The pinball machine was just inside the door past the phone booth and was very popular. photo by Bob Gruen

This Sunday, the subject is Pinball. That's right, 18 slices of Silverball goodness served up piping hot to satisfy your musical appetite.

Next week, the Estrus record label is the Subject. Got some Marble Orchard, Phantom Surfers and Mono Men picked out already for the show

In 2 weeks, we'll be headin' across the pond for another Britpop episode.

If you have any songs to contribute to either of those shows, please let me know at redredwineonasunday@gmail.com

Be sure to join me every Sunday night at 9pm Pacific (midnight Eastern) for Red Red Wine on a Sunday LIVE. No themes, just some great music I've been listening to, both old and new.

Warsteiner Oktoberfest

Starting off the evening with a cold glass o' suds. It's an Indian Summer out here in Northern California, so no Red yet. Gotta cool off while the Brauts are grilling!

Planning the annual trip to the Pinball Mecca (the Pacific Pinball Exposition) in Marin.

That's right - next Saturday, my flipper fingers will be gettin a workout on the 300 games at the show. Bought a 12-pack of the Warsteiner, so I'll have a few left to take to the show - nothing better than Beer and Pinball!

Next week, Pinball is the Subject. I'll be visiting the Pacific Pinball Exposition in a few weeks, so I want to let you know about that great show and what better way than to play some great songs about Pinball also.

In 2 weeks, we will be celebrating that great label Estrus!

2008 Owen Roe Sharecropper's Cabernet Sauvignon Redux

Got some Tri-Tip on the grill, Football on the Tele and a bottle of Owen Rose 2008 Sharecropper's Cabernet Sauvignon open this afternoon. Yes, I've posted about this one before, back in June, but if you are having beef, nothing is better that a good Cab. Here's some propoganda from the Website:

"The fuit for the 2008 Sharecropper Cabernet Sauvignon is all Columbia Valley AVA. With a beautifully long Indian summer the 2008 vintage yielded perfectly ripe fruit with lithe bright acidity. This wine has a beautiful nose ripe with blueberries, black currants, dark cherries and wild strawberries. A nice long finish lingers with flavors of licorice, olives and cedar. Muscular, but not a brute, firm tannins and elegant structure will let this wine age beautifully over 4-6 years."

OK - I'll overlook the fact that they mispelled Fruit, because the author of this hits the mark perfectly - a truly great Washington Cabernet.

Ebay Rock 45's

Each Friday, I post a select group of 5 rock 45's that sold on Ebay recently.

Not sure which songs are on this one - don't read Spanish....

The Sparkles No Friend Of Mine $260.55
From the Auction:
Up for auction is a collectable and rare garage rock promotional 45 record by The Sparkles titled No Friend Of Mine b/w First Forget (What Has Made You Blue) on Hickory Records released in 1967. Of all The Sparkles 45 releases, this is the one everybody wants, and it's the best song.

The Avengers We Are The One $249.99
From the auction:

DANGERHOUSE KBD NM ORIG 1st PS

AVENGERS
We Are The One +
I Believe In Me

Original 1977 first pressing 45 by the Avengers. A-side features "We Are The One" and "I Believe In Me". B-side features "Car Crash"

Dangerhouse SFD 400 with original half-fold "crucifix" image picture sleeve.

The sleeve is near mint. There is a small ink mark on the labels where the speed was crossed out (both sides). Side B has a small sleeve scuff and very small portion of color removed from the label (see image). Otherwise, this record is in excellent, near mint condition.

Penelope Houston - vocals
Greg Westermark - guitar, vocals
Danny Furious - drums, vocals
James Calvin Wilsey - bass, vocals

The Lancasters Satan's Holiday $199.99
Earthquake c/w Satan's Holiday (1965), a US-only release on Titan as by The Lancasters, was actually a one-off guitar instrumental produced in London by the indomitable Kim Fowley and featured guitar pyrotechnics by a young and impecunious Ritchie Blackmore.
"Satan's Holiday" is a fine, menacing tune, with part of the songwriting credit going to James Phelge, the Rolling Stones' friend honored by half of the Nanker-Phelge pseudonym the Stones used on early group compositions !
PS: Of course, the melody is taken from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt (In the hall of the mountain king)
