Auburn Alehouse Gold Digger IPA

Cracked open a local craft brew this fine March afternoon,  It's a Gold Digger IPA from the Auburn Alehouse brewed just a few hours drive from the Pinhead Studios.  This ale comes in a 22 oz. bomber and checks in at 65 IBU and 6.3% alcohol.  It pours a nice amber / copper color with an off white head.
Pine notes jump right out at ya and the hops are rather predominate in the initial sip.  Some nice caramel
notes in there as well with a hint of butterscotch.  Bites ya on the finish with the alpha acids lingering around a bit on the tongue.  One of those beers that begs for a burger or some fries to back up the mix of  the malt and hop flavors.  Quite nice and I'll be trying out more beers from this Alehouse.  Hey - maybe it is time for a Road trip to Auburn...

The Auburn Alehouse Gold Digger IPA site -----> Here's a Nugget that James Marshall missed!

Beer Advocate on the Gold Digger IPA -----> 83  (hmmm - I'd rate this one in the 90's....)

2010 Tormaresco Neprica

Picked up a nice Italian Red this week.  The 2010 version of Tormaresca Neprica, a wine that I had 2 vintages ago.  This vintage is just as tasty and a good bargain at under a tenner.  Nice berry fruits, italian spices and a bit of pepper.  Medium body with a nice warm finish.

Here's a couple of new reviews and a link to the winery -

This is going great with the Spaghetti Carbonara that I've whipped up tonight.

Here's the Secret Formula (courtesy of the long-gone Little Joes' on Columbus in SF):

2 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup ground or finely diced prosciutto
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 cup chopped pitted black olives
1/3 cup dry white wine
1/3 cup chicken broth
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Pepper
1 egg
6 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 pound spaghetti, cooked
Heat oil in large skillet. Add prosciutto, mushrooms, garlic and olives. Saute until mushrooms are tender. Add wine and broth. Bring to boil. Simmer over high heat until liquid is reduced by half. Add parsley and season to taste with pepper. (Do not add salt.) Break egg into mushroom mixture and stir until egg is cooked. Add Parmesan cheese and mix well. Pour over cooked spaghetti and toss until mixed. Serve at once. Makes 2 to 4 servings.

Troeg's Brewing Nugget Nectar

All the way from the Troeg's Brewery in Hershey, PA, I've opened up a Nugget Nectar.  Thanks go out to Richard for sending a couple of these outstanding beers out my way all the way from Maine.  Drinking a toast to your right now, my friend.  Shhh - don't tell the Post Office, but those guys in blue do a fine job of protecting the Suds!

This beer is one of the best examples of an American Amber Ale, which the Beer Advocate's style guide describes as thus:  "This Style of beer tends to focus on the malts, but hop character can range from low to high.  Expect a balanced beer, with toasted malt characters and a light fruitiness in most examples".  Well said and it applies perfectly to this beer.  Heavy on the tropical fruits for the Nugget Nectar - lotsa bananas and citrusy notes. The balance is key to this beer that is pretty high on the alcohol (7.50) and IBU (93ish) scales.  Very highly rated beer and deservedly so.  The clincher for me is the superb malt flavor - words cannot describe the flavor - Heaven!

Troeg's Nugget Nectar site ------->  Squeeze those hops

Beer Avocate sit on the beer -----> 98 is the score

Did a little record shopping in the East Bay this last week - hit up Dave's Record store in Berkeley (see above) and Down Home Music in El Cerrito (see below).  Some nice 7" vinyl at both!  Thank goodness the record store is still alive and kicking out here on the left coast.
