Fort George Brewing Vortex IPA

Recording the Halloween episode and sampling a beer that I brought back from a trip to Portland earlier this week.  This one, a Fort George Brewing Vortex IPA, came back in my checked luggage.  I should have read the can as the beer is unpasteurized and needs to be refrigerated at all times.  Well, it was in my bag for a couple of days and then hit the refrigerator, none the worse for wear.  The brewery is in Astoria, Oregon on the banks of the Mighty Columbia River downstream from Portland and just before the waters of the river empty into the Pacific.

Nice orange color with small white floaters due to this being an unfiltered beer.  So, that means that I just downed lotsa brewers yeast - yeah - my Chromium and Vitamin B - complex quota for the day has been met, as the yeast provide lotsa great stuff for your health - Cheers!

This one is 7.7% ABV and rates a 97 IBU.  Nicely balanced, but with a couple of sharp notes that prevent it from being stellar.  I will seek out more from the brewery if I ever get back up to Portland.

2011 Tuella Douro - Corked, Corked Wine on a Saturday....

Posting this on a Saturday, as I'll be winging my way up to Portland for a short trip tomorrow afternoon.  Working on the podcast this afternoon as well, so expect it to be released tomorrow morning.

One word for this wine - Corked!  Ya know, I was looking forward to a red from Portugal and this one looked promising sitting on the shelf at Trader Joe's.  This one was so corked, I couldn't even get an idea of the grape, a varietal that I have never tried before.  Too bad.

So info on cork taint from wiki - TCA has a characteristic odor, resembling a moldy newspaper....

Hope your afternoon is going better - I decided to crack open a Flipside and enjoy some pinball.

Southern Oregon Brewing Company Pin-Up Porter

A Wonderful Fall Day out here on the Left Coast.  Wearing jeans for the first time as it is below 70 out, but sunny as hell.  It's that time of year to crack open the Dark Ones......   I've got a Porter from the Southern Oregon Brewing Company opened up this afternoon and it is tasting heavenly.  I picked this up earlier this year on a trip to Portland and on the advice of a listener of the show.  Been saving it for when the weather turns and am kicking myself for not opening it up sooner.  Very light for a porter, almost in the English style, very unlike the big chewy American Porters that I have had before.  This one is very Malt Forward and what malt they put in this one - they use Weyermann's dehusked Carafa II malt that lends the chocolate and coffe undertones.  Briess Carapils, Rahr 2-row and Caramel malts give it body and Danish lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures (much like the so called "steam" style of Anchor brewing in San Francisco) is a bit of magic that catapults this one up to the top of the Porter heap.  I get a bit of burnt fig and a very light soy sauce when it is in the nose and a very nice smooth finish that I'm loving.  From what I have read, this one is supposed to have a burnt character like a Rauchbier, but I'm not getting that.  This video review below calls out the smokiness - hey maybe the aging that my bottle has undertook smoothed it out?

Here a few more links to consider -
