Blog Spotlight - Power Pop Criminals

Power Pop Criminals is an essential site for Power Pop fans.

Here's an excerpt from a post in April of 2008: click here to go to the archive:

Jordan Oakes began publishing his seminal power pop 'zine, "Yellow Pills" in the summer of 1990 out of pure teenage puppy love for riffing, jangly guitars, fake British accents and harmonizing voices that ache with pimply adolescent yearning. As Yellow Pills began to notso-quietly circulate, Jordan quickly became the keeper of the keys (G and D, mostly) of all matters pop. So much so that he became something of a minor celebrity himself, greeted at Poptopia by Japanese teenage girls squealing "Yellow Pills! Yellow Pills!"

In 1993 Jordan curated his initial Yellow Pills release, the first of a series collecting power pop essentials from 20/20, Dwight Twilley, The Rubinoos, The Plimsouls, and five dozen others. The series rapidly became the sonic rosetta stone for a newer generation of poppers who, sans the skinny ties, held true to the power pop manifesto of harmony, melody and ringing, rocking 6 and 12 string guitars. The archaeological artifacts of power pop soon found a home in living museums of the genre from Teenage Fanclub to Green Day.

In the midst of this mini-renaissance, Yellow Pills seemed poised to be the banner under which this newer wave would plot its next invasion. But, like so many flags of the rock era, it flew only briefly, folded without ceremony and put away like the record collections of so many kids off to college. Twelve issues, four discs, and a nervous breakdown later, Jordan Oakes quietly disappeared into semi retirement and the ethnic, old-world landscape of South St. Louis.Read here.

Rolling Stones - The Promotional Album

Vinyl Records Top 5 eBay Sales Week Ending 01/09/2010

1. LP - Rolling Stones Promotional Album Decca RSM.1 UK - $9,191.35

2. LP - The Beatles "Please Please Me" Parlophone UK Gold Black label 1st Stereo - $5,688.73

3. LP - Carl Schurict "Bruckner's 8th Sympony" ASD 602/3 UK Pressing - $2,771.22

4. 45 - Billy Byrd "Silly Kind Of Love" / "Lost In The Crowd" Scream - $2,601.88

5. LP - Pussy "Pussy Plays" Morgan Blue Town - $2,400.64

A Rolling Stones LP for almost 10 G's? What's the story?

This Decca 1969 UK LP was limited to 200 copies and has become a collector's item.

It is called simply "The Promtional Album"

Included in the record was a hand-typed letter that explains the release:

"This promotional record features outstanding
tracks from Rolling Stones albums which we hope will be of
use as a program aid. It has been prepared by the
Rolling Stones in view of the greatly revived interest in
their earlier material which has been brought about by
their return to “the roots” of their music – as exemplified
by “Honky Tonk Women”. However, in addition to the older
numbers you will find – on side 2, track 7 – “Love In Vain”
which is featured in the Stones forthcoming album “Let It
Bleed” – due for release here on December 5th . Only 200
copies of this promotional record have been produced in
Britain and we very much regret that no further copies can
be ordered. This album is, therefore, something of a
collector’s item.
Incidentally, the sleeves were printed in the United
States and, therefore, the publishing details and timings
refer to the American record and it would be appreciated
if the record label itself could be referred to for
Copyright and programming purposes.
This L.P., in combination with the two hits L.P.’s,*
can provide you with a comprehensive history of the
Rolling Stones. We hope you will enjoy the record."

What about the 5th record on the list "Pussy Plays"?

I did a little searching and it turns out that this 1969 UK LP is one of the rarest albums of the entire British prog-rock scene. Very obscure, hence the price. Not much is known about the group as the band members are not listed on the album and they have never revealed their identities.

Blog Spotlight - Punk Turns 30

The image above is from an excellent website that I stumbled upon recently. It's called Punk Turns 30 and is the personal blog of Theresa K. In the photo above is Penelope Houston of the Avengers and the "Major of Sunset Strip" Rodney Bingenheimer

In her words "I have always been a photographer. When punk rock happened in my native Los Angeles, I captured it. My photos appeared on record sleeves like The Germs "Forming" and in magazines like Lobotomy, Creem, Rolling Stone and Playboy. Here are some photos and memories from those days"

Be sure to dig into the archives, as it contains tons of great photos and stories

Here's an example:

An excerpt from the link above -

On the final date of the Sex Pistols 1978 tour - their only tour of the USA as the line-up that included the late Sid Vicious, local bands opened the Winterland show. The Nuns and Avengers opened. The two local bands did a phenomenal job on their home turf despite all the pandemonium that accompanied the presence of the Sex Pistols. In my opinion, The Avengers' pride and convicted performance stole the show. That's not saying the Sex Pistols were overshadowed...not at all. You had to be there to understand just how great the Avengers were. Thanks to the advent of YouTube, people who weren't there (and who weren't born yet!) can witness the Pistols' performance:

The youtube link on the Punk turns 30 site references a clip that has been pulled down, so I found that clip above as a replacement.

Her links are great too - Punk 77, The Clash Blog and Alice Bag.

Don't miss her Punk Rock FAQ in Pictures - great photos of the Last, 20/20, Nick Gilder and Blondie.

Well, this 45 has a picture sleeve (shown above) that is unique to the Portuguese pressing of the single and is considered the "Holy Grail" for the David Bowie collector. Madness - Dust Devil

I picked up the 45 shown above last June on a trip to London at an HMV shop on Oxford street and it has been on the jukebox ever since. Dust Devil is the A Side and The Roadette Song sits on the B Side. The packaging is clever, as the sleeve has that "worn in" look even though it is new (wrinkled edges, creases, lifting ink) and the label has handwritten notes and a "fake" center cutout (the center is actually solid with only the small "LP" hole - common for most UK 45's). It is obvious that the boys in Madness had some fun modelling the art on the 45 after one (or a number) of the Ska 45's in their collection.

The music on the 45 is just as good as the artwork, as Dust Devil reached #64 in the UK singles chart and #1 in the UK Independent music chart on 17 May 2009. The B-side, "The Roadette Song" was originally recorded by Ian Dury with his band, Kilburn and the High Roads. The Madness cover version was originally intended to be on their 2005 album The Dangerman Sessions, Vol. 1.

The single is from the album The Liberty of Norton Folgate and here's a quote from the Mojo magazine review of the album:

"Thirty Years into their career, the Nutty Boys write a love letter to London. You can't accuse Madness of overdoing it; this is only their second album of all-new material since 1985's Mad Not Mad. Thankfully it was worth the wait. Named for a corner of the City of London that was legally autonomous until 1900, it's a themed, time-shifting salute to the capital in all of its infinite variety. Using the familiar pop-reggae sound of yore with singer Suggs, in tragi-comedian mood, it energetically represents the band's sombre, complicated side that doesn't always show at the hit-packed live gigs. In these songs marriages fail, things get worse as you get older and joys are fleeting, but it's depth not length that count in time, and ultimately, as on the blissful escape of Africa and the mystic title track's astonishment at a city "sprung up from the dark mud of the Thames," the results are uplifting. Still totally themselves, Madness have made the album of their career."

Here's the "Nutty Boys" on Later with Jools Holland performing Dust Devil -

Here's the "official" video of the song -
