Anderson Valley Brewing Summer Solstice Cream Ale

Creeping up over the 90 degree mark over here on the Left Coast, so time for a nice light session ale. Poured the summer seasonal from the Anderson Valley Brewing Company, a cream ale called Summer Solstice.  Brewed with a proprietary recipe that must include some caramel and honey flavors, this one has a creamy rich taste with very little hop bite.  At only 5% ABV, it goes down smooth and begs to pour another.  I've been working my way through a 6-pack these last few weeks and have found the carbonation level to vary quite a bit - from almost flat to just a finger of head.  Wonder if I got some that were bottled during a bad day on the bottling line?  Don't like the fact that the carbonation is all over the place - doesn't speak too well of the brewery.  The 3 that had carbonation were great and I'd recommend you try it yourself, but I won't be going back for more, as Russian Roulette is not my favorite game.

Helles Schlenkerla Lager

It's 90 degrees outside, so I've retreated into the cool dark confines of the Pinhead Studios for a cold one, some vinyl and a game or two of Palooka.   The extra ball is lit and the lager is poured.  This afternoon, I've got a Helles Schlenkerla Lagerbier from the brewery in Bamburg, Germany.  This is one of the legendary "Rauchbiers", or smoked beers native to that area of Bavaria. Now, I've had the Marzen before, and since it is a bit on the warm side here on the left coast, I went for a lighter version of the smoked beer.  This one starts out as a nicely balanced typical German Lager, but the aftertaste is where the unique smokiness takes over, leaving you with a thrist for more. The website claims that every coaster at the brewery states -

"Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange, at the first swallow, do not stop, because soon you will realize that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase"

2011 Benefactor Shiraz

Opened up an Australian Shiraz this afternoon from Benefactor Cellars.  I searched high and low for any info on the winery that is responsible for this Shiraz and, for some reason, they remain hidden from view.  After having a sip, I can see why.  Very flat and lifeless, not much fruit and very dry.  The alcohol level is at 13%, so it's not a hot one, but it just doesn't present much to like. Hey - you get what you pay for.

Anderson Valley Brewing Hop Ottin' IPA

It's a fine Sunday afternoon out here on the left coast - about to hit the 90 degree mark, so time for a cold one.  I've popped the top on a nice Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA that should make short work of my thirst.  Nice three (or four) finger head and loads of fruit (green raisins, pears, all sortsa citrus).  Wonderful malt notes and a very strong backbone leads me to think this is one of the best IPA's I've had.  But wait, what about the Sculpin?  OK, this one is #2.....
