2011 Murphy Goode Homefront Red

A Blustery Sunday out here on the West Cast.  Keeping warm with a Red Blend from the fine folks at the Murphy Goode Winery in Healdsburg.  The blend is called Homefront Red and is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Petite Sirah , Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The interesting thing about the wine is the fact that proceeds from the sale of the wine goes to Operation Homefront, which provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors.

The wine pours a nice dark red, most likely due to the Petite Verdot and smells of Vanilla and Oak.  On the tongue more vanilla and sour cherry, plum and spice.  I have to admit that when I went to purchase the wine I was looking for either the Murphy Goode Pinot Noir or one of their Zinfandels (Liar's Dice or Snake Eyes).  This wine is very nice, but I'd not go back for another bottle as I'd select the Pinot Noir or one of the Zinfandels first.

Cheers,
Jerry

Nøgne Ø Terrapin Imperial Rye Porter

A glorious Spring (late Winter) day out here on the left coast.  It's gonna hit 70 degrees here today.  I expected the weather to be a bit dreary, so opted for a nice dark beer.  I've got a Nøgne Ø Terrapin Imperial Rye Porter open this afternoon.  This beer is the result of a collaboration between Nøgne Ø Brewery located in Grimstad, Norway and the Terrapin Brewery located in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA.

The beer has a nice aroma - chocolate, cocoa and that wonderful spiciness of Rye.  On the tongue, the smoothness of the beer is highlighted with generous malt mouth feel and just a hint of tropical hops.  The ABV is 9.0% and it is sold in a 500ml bottle.
