Kona Brewing Company Big Wave Golden Ale

Aloha on this Gorgeous Sunday!  Ok you got me - I don't speak Hawaiian - in fact, I've never even been there, but this Big Wave Golden Lager from the Kona Brewing Company is taking me there.  I can picture myself on one of those Black Sand beaches with one of these in my hand.  But for now, I'll just enjoy the wonderfully smooth American Blonde Ale in my hand.  I was reading through the reviews of this Ale on the great Beer Advocate site and ran into a perfect description - Cornbread - yep, it's got a great honey and bread yeast flavor and aroma.  This beer is very light and drinkable - perfect for a late summer day (or a Black Sand Beach).  Now - it doesn't get much love over at the Beer Advocate (check below for the link), but I love it and out of the four beers that I received in the sampler case, this one ranks #2 behind the Koko Brown Ale I wrote about a few weeks ago.  Also in the sampler case was a sixer each of the Longboard Island Lager and the Fire Rock Pale Ale.  Both were good, but not great.  I need to try some more of this Hawaiian goodness.  I saw a Coffee Porter in a can from the company at my local beer shoppe.  Now that might be good in the coming months...

A bit on the rekkids - I always hit up a local SPCA Thrift store weekly, but had not been in a couple.  Surprisingly, there awaiting me was a stack of UK 45's from the late 50's and early 60's.  Needless to say - I made a donation to the cause and walked away with a dozen or so - Impalas, Gete Pitney, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Duane Eddy and a Sue records pressing of Little Piece of Leather from Donnie Elbert - great stuff at 2 for a dollar.

Joseph Handler 2011 German Pfalz Riesling

Spending the afternoon picking out the songs for the second "Blue" episode of the podcast and uncorked a Riesling in a blue bottle for the occasion.  Additionally, it is a hot day out here on the left coast and a nice German Riesling is very refreshing when the temperature nears the century mark.

This one is from the Joseph Handler winery in the Pfalz wine region of Southern Germany.  At only 10.5 % alcohol, this wine is light and nicely balanced with just a hint of sweetness and a bit of acidity.  The flavors are characteristic of the varietal - green apple and honey up front and a very light finish - almost imperceptible.  At only $5 from my local Trader Joe's, I guess I shouldn't expect a knockout wine.  I might try another Riesling next time as this one is very subtle.  Hey, maybe you like your Riesling's that way - if so - this one is for you.

Some info on the Pfalz region of Germany- Palatinate

Cheers
Jerry

Koko Brown Ale from the Kona Brewing Company

The thermometer is reading 103 degrees outside, but in the dark reaches of the Pinhead Studios it is a cool 75 degrees and the Ale is flowing - this week I've cracked open a Koko Brown Ale from the Kona Brewing Company.  A friend of mine brought over a sampler case from the Kona Brewing Company, based in Maui and this one has become my favorite.  The Nut Brown ale characters pair well with the toasted coconut that the brewery uses in this brew.  Yes - I know it sounds a bit strange, but what a heavenly taste - highly recommended.

Here's some propoganda from the Kona Brewing Company -  Koko Brown

Here's the Beer Advocate Page - Koko Brown

Cheers,
Jerry

The 45, you ask?  Just got this in the mail from a listener - Noland.  It from his band the Tanked.

2009 Four Vines Old Vine Cuvee Zinfandel

Grilling a couple of pizzas tonight and opened up a nice Zin to help inspire the topping choices.  This one is a 2009 Four Vines Zinfandel, specifically the Old Vines Cuvee.  According to the propoganda on the label "Old vines lend depth and character to layers of silky berry fruit and spice."  Hmm - yep getting both of those - this one seems very fresh with none of the prune character that I expect in Old Vine Zins - interesting, but tasty!  Love the slogan on the back label and on the cork - "Living in Zin".  Got this one at just under $10 - a bargain if you ask me.

Here's some propoganda from the Four Vines website ------  Four Vines

And their Facebook page ---- Four Vines Facebook

A nice article of the wine ----- Blog Your Wine

Had a great time at a local record swap this morning - picked up a nice vintage 45 carrier - a "Platter-Pak"  and proceeded to fill it up with Sweet UK 45s.  Yep -thats Wig Wam Bam and Action.

Cheers,
Jerry
